The 6020 is a nice looking and highly capable handset and the 7710 breaks some new ground in high end display and video capture for mobile devices, but the one I can’t wait to get my hands on is the 3230.
The 3230 looks to be a smartly designed Series 60 2nd Edition phone with a 1.3 MPix camera and stereo FM radio & MP3 player. Best of all, Nokia’s 3230 press release indicates it will likely sell at a mid-range price point, helping feature rich smartphones penetrate further into the masses.
I’m drooling in anticipation… 🙂
CNN.com reports on the world interest in this particularly heated USÂ election.
Whatever you do today, if you are an American, get out and vote! And BTW, if you’re undecided, vote for Kerry. 🙂
PS CNN also has a great returns page that will be ramping up as polls begin to close.

Some of you may have noticed trouble off and on (mostly on) with my site for the last month or so. Apologies if it’s caused you any inconvenience. If I hadn’t been on a long vacation I probably would have jumped on things quicker, but anyway now I’m back and just did some sleuthing around tonight to get things fixed up.
The good news: My site is back up and should be running as usual. The bad news: NTT Verio stinks!
Let me explain. It turns out that:
- My ISP, NTT Verio, upgraded my PHP server without my knowledge in late September
- When they shutdown/restarted PHP as a part of the upgrade, they did it incorrectly
- Surprise, surprise, their mistake corrupted my MySQL tables, hosing my site!
The worst part of all of this, besides the fact that no one at NTT Verio ever even bothered to tell me they were going to do an upgrade or even that my PHP server would be down during a restart, is that when I inquired if they had done an upgrade, they told me no. This inspite of the fact that a quick check of phpinfo clearly shows otherwise!
Suffice it to say I’m not happy with NTT Verio. I’ve been thinking of abandoning them for a while. This incident has pushed me to the brink. If anyone can make a suggestion for a good PHP-enabled host, preferably with Servlet/JSP support too, that could seal the deal. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming
I first blogged about sports venues lighting up WiFi networks earlier this year in posts about the San Francisco Giants. Now eWeek reports that there are other Major League Baseball teams also wireless-enabling their common areas.
I can’t wait to try this out on the 9500!
Vodafone has announced a lineup of new 3G handsets for their Japanese network.
New models include the Vodafone 702NK, a Japanese version of the Nokia 6630.
Nokia has begun shipments of its first Series 60 fold phone. Read the press release, or better yet check out the 6260’s specs and learn more about Series 60 Platform 2nd Edition Feature Pack 1 which it uses.
Nokia and other participating companies recently released jointly developed specifications for Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA).
UMA enables access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies such as Bluetooth and WiFi with security equivalent to GSM. In other words, subscribers will be able to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets while maintaining access to mobile services.
Re-read the paragraph above and think about this a bit. Very powerful stuff.
Learn more from the UMA site via its Overview and Technology pages. Or dive into the details by reading the specifications.
What next? UMA is being introduced into 3GPP for official standardization, so hopefully a seemless cellular and WiFi roaming experience will be coming to handsets near you in the not too distant future.
