Of course this three screens idea is nothing new. The importance of TV and mobile phone screens joining into the computer screen fun is something that’s been anticipated, discussed, and written about in mobile circles for years. What is interesting to me is that, perhaps for the first time, there is a company in place that has a reasonable chance to simultaneously capitalize on all three screens: Apple.

Mac sales are doing well. Apple TV has launched. And iPhone has already generated more than 1 million customer inquiries to AT&T three months before it even launches.

If done right, the elegant and simple Apple way, these products taken together represent a tremendous “three screens” opportunity. With iTunes as the digital hub, content can be consumed on any of a consumer’s three screens, when and how they want, at work, at home, and on the move.

One could argue that Microsoft has a similar chance with Windows, XBox 360, and Windows Mobile. The interoperability between the three, however, is not as streamlined and therefore not as consumer friendly as the Apple solutions, which are cleanly tied together through iTunes. And according to news reports, Xbox Live has something like 6 million users versus more than 100 million iTunes users, giving Apple a very significant advantage in the number of eyeballs potentially leveragable across all three screens.

The opportunity is tremendous. Heck, even the Chairman of the FCC seems to get it. I sure hope Apple fully realizes it by providing developers with the access they need to all three screens.

I’ve been reading the deluge of reports and press releases from the 3GSM World Congress 2005 which wrapped up yesterday in Cannes. Expanding upon last year’s limited Sun and Intel & Nokia 3GSM posts, I thought this year I’d summarize the major wireless developments via links to various 3GSM bits from around the Web.

Starting with the official site and then jumping around per my whimsy:

• Everybody made cellpod announcements: Nokia and Microsoft (Russ isn’t surprised), Motorola and Apple (well, sort of), Sony Ericsson, even Sendo (plus read Business 2.0′s take here)
• Motorola is working with Skype to build VoIP-over-WiFi capable mobile phones (thanks for listening, Moto!)
• Nokia’s 3GSM key themes (is it just me or are these a bit, well, obvious?) plus newly announced 6101, 6102, 6680 (WCDMA/GSM, Series 60 2nd Ed FP2, dual camera including 1.3MPix on back, but where’s the WiFi?), and 6681 cellcams
• Moto’s 3GSM 2005 site including link to the Moto 3GSM flip book (PDF) which provides a good overview of their handsets and other wireless products
• GSM Association Awards (best enterprise app, best mobile handset, etc.)

Yahoo/Reuters reports on Nokia’s recent announcement of the Series 60 based Nokia 3230 along with the Series 40 based Nokia 6020 and the Nokia 7710 media device.

The 6020 is a nice looking and highly capable handset and the 7710 breaks some new ground in high end display and video capture for mobile devices, but the one I can’t wait to get my hands on is the 3230.

The 3230 looks to be a smartly designed Series 60 2nd Edition phone with a 1.3 MPix camera and stereo FM radio & MP3 player. Best of all, Nokia’s 3230 press release indicates it will likely sell at a mid-range price point, helping feature rich smartphones penetrate further into the masses.

Both Motorola and Nokia have announced some interesting new devices at CTIA this week.

A small sample from the cellcam category alone:

• Motorola A845 (fact sheet), a 3G/UMTS phone with video and still camera support, Bluetooth, an MP3 player, and 64MB of memory built-in, to be deployed by AT&T Wireless in H2 2004.
• Nokia 6255 (Forum Nokia data sheet), a CDMA2000 1X clamshell handset with dual color screens, a VGA camera with flash (imagine that, a flash!), MP3/AAC and stereo FM radio support, GPS support for E911, Bluetooth, and J2ME MIDP 2.0. All in all, Nokia’s most advanced and feature rich CDMA handset, available Q4 2004.

Is the US finally starting to catch up with the rest of the wireless world’s handset options?

Also, Nokia made some Series 60 news including the reiteration of the availability of Series60.com, a one stop shop for Series 60 device and development information from all licensees, and the announcement that LG Electronics has licensed Series 60 for use in upcoming LG Symbian based smart phones.
